Tomorrow afternoon Buell Leaders' Radio will host an interview with Cassandra, Sena, and Dorothy - our "Bird Brains." They will be sharing about how they got started on this project, how they collaborate to get things done, and some of the challenges they face in this endeavor.

Cassandra Johnson

Cassandra is a “birdbrain” for The Nest Matters. She had a vision to share the latest research and findings from experts and doctors in the field with “everyday” caregivers, grandparents, and parents like herself. She approached two of her colleagues that also hold a strong passion for children with a vision. Together the group birthed The Nest Matters.

Cassandra is a mother of three, and Business Manager for HOPE Center, Inc. a 4-Star quality rated and accredited Early Childhood Program for children ages 2 ½ - 5 years and Vocational Services for Developmentally Disabled Adults located in Denver’s inner city. With over 17 years of experience in Early Childhood and Administration and former single parent, Cassandra knows the struggles and experiences that exist; from balancing herself as a student, managing a full-time career and being a mom all at the same time. She has a strong passion for growing the minds of all early learners and is fascinated with the neuroscience behind child and brain development.

Sena Harjo

Sena Harjo is an active member of the Seminole, Choctaw and Creek Nations. Currently, she attends the University of Denver (DU) pursuing a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. In 2007 she graduated Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) with a Bachelor’s degree in American Indian Studies. She also earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from HINU. Prior to obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree, Harjo attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Creative Writing, Photography, and Printmaking. It was at IAIA that Harjo found her devotion to youth. She began working in a program where she traveled to inner-city communities to teach art to Native American Youth. Growing up on the South side of Denver gave Harjo a unique perspective on the life of an Urban Indian Youth. Sparked with excitement and eagerness, Harjo sought out native communities to immerse herself in as a working professional. She continued the good work as a team member of the Jefferson County Public School’s Indian Education Program, and now at Clayton Early Learning. She believes in giving back to her community here in Denver so she stays active volunteering and collaborating with community organizations. Harjo truly believes in the possibilities of the next generation and is willing to take the necessary steps to do her part to make progress happen.

Dorothy Shapland

Dorothy is the mother of a college graduate, and co-mom to many of her former students who have adopted her over the years.

Currently the English Language Development Teacher Leader in Aurora Colorado, and Adjunct Faculty in Early Childhood Education at Metropolitan State University. Dorothy is a licensed Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Secondary English teacher, and holds Child Care Center Director Qualification, Montessori pre-primary certification, and a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Denver. With 30 years experience teaching preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school students in private, public, charter and magnet schools, Dorothy is the “birdbrain” who brings an academic perspective to The Nest Matters.
